DP5 - Experimental Zine

New Direction

Our project took a very different turn and in an effort to focus more on experimenting with type, I decided that I should work toward creating a type classification zine.

I based the text roughly on several articles I read from www.ilovetypography.com and Adobe. I categorized the type classifications in to the following:

  • Blackletter
  • Humanist
  • Old Style
  • Transitional
  • Modern
  • Slab Serif
  • Decorative
  • Script
  • Variable

I started in InDesign and created the following layout:

After printing a mockup at full size I determined this layout was too stagnant and definitely not experimental. I Opted to take the whole design into Adobe Illustrator to allow me to "play" a lot more and be bolder in my experiments. I could still use style sheets and most of the great typography tools that exist in InDesign.

This is the progression of the design:

Perfect Paint

Create a folio showing the process of efficiently painting a room and how the process can be simplified and streamlined.

Imagery and paint tools can be used to make letterforms that give tips and pointers to help a person get the best results, not waste time, paint, or other supplies.

The narrative follows a typical arc in that it involves a lot of preparation, then things start moving quickly as pain starts being applied either with a brush, roller, or sprayer. Then the cleanup happens quickly thanks to the prep and tips serving as the falling action.
